About the Ballet
Few modern choreographers have displayed such an instinct for textual adaptation and been able to convey in dance the subtleties and complexities of literary works as did John Cranko. Alexander Pushkin’s verse-novel Eugene Onegin, a cornerstone of the 19th - century European romantic sensibility, is a case in point.
Mr. Cranko’s 1965 ballet adaptation, Onegin, employs his distinctive choreographic style to capture the original story’s emotional intensity, potent drama and tragic ironies with striking fidelity and perceptiveness. From Pushkin’s story of his Byronic hero, Eugene, and his love for Tatiana, Cranko has shaped a timeless, layered examination of the themes of passion, honour and regret. Tchaikovsky’s music provides the perfect musical context for the ballet, shifting from moments of melodramatic intensity to moods of poetic calm.
Along with his great versions of Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew, Onegin must rank as one of Cranko’s – and modern ballet’s – finest adaptations.
The production features new sets and costumes by one of today’s most illustrious contemporary designers, Santo Loquasto.
